AIA Wyoming Leadership

President

Mitchell T. Blake

Ward | Blake Architects

Mitch Blake developed a love for nature growing up on the banks of the Snake River. Working on the family farms instilled an intimate connection with the land and a reverence toward the bio-climatic environment. After graduating from the University of Idaho in 1983, Mitch worked in Salt Lake City for several years gaining experience with concrete, masonry and steel. Bringing this experience to Jackson Hole in 1987, Mitch found a wealth of new inspiration in the natural elements of Wyoming. In 1996, he partnered with Tom Ward to create a symbiotic architectural practice dedicated to ecologically responsible principles and designing buildings that harmonize with their environment. Mitch’s work has won many awards and been published in a number of magazines and books. He has served on the board of the Family Safety Network in Driggs, Idaho, been President and Treasurer of Lochan Fen Subdivision HOA, and has served on Task Force Committees for Alta School with Teton County School District #1. Mitch is licensed in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.

Secretary

Carl T. Kohut

Prospect Studio

Through architecture, Carl Kohut seeks opportunities to engage with communities often overlooked by the design community. From Port-au-Prince to the Sonoran Desert, Carl’s work spans diverse environments but is always inspired by place and grounded by utility. At Prospect, he looks forward to further serving the people and landscape of the Rocky Mountain West.

Carl previously worked for four years as a project manager at CLB Architects. There, he coordinated and helped design a number of residential and commercial projects, including the Wells Fargo location in downtown Jackson Hole. One project, nicknamed Dog Trot due to the house’s traditional breezeway structure, won an American Architecture Award and was featured in Wallpaper Magazine, Dezeen, and Archdaily.

Before landing in Jackson, Carl received a Master of Architecture from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. While studying from 2014 until 2016, he completed an internship at Tianhua Group, a large commercial firm based in Shanghai, China; he volunteered his strategic planning skills to help reestablish agriculture as a means of cultural expression and expansion in Shiprock, New Mexico; and he traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti with xcoop to engage residents in a participatory design exercise. Upon graduating, Carl earned a Mies Crown Hall Americas (MCHAP) nomination for the student shelter he designed, built, and inhabited for six months at Taliesin West. Additionally, Carl holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from SCAD.

Beyond the studio, Carl is a member of AIA Wyoming and works towards elevating the regional design dialogue and better connect the state's dispersed architects. He also enjoys trail running, hockey, and working on the house he designed and built with his wife, Sarah.
